Sony has recently unveiled its highly anticipated gaming smartphone Xperia Play which is the first of its kind to be PlayStation certified phone. This portable gaming-cum-smartphone includes the richness of high quality console gaming experience while also facilitating the smartness and the power of the popular Android based operating system in which the various phone features works. Being powered by a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play runs on the Android 2.3 a.k.a Gingerbread and also uses its customized user interface within the platform.

It sports an impressive 5MP primary camera while also having a larger size 4-inch capacitive TFT display having a resolution of 480-by-854 pixels which thereby provides a comfortable view while playing games and enjoying other multimedia contents. The internal memory support built-in to this mobile phone is around 400MB in capacity and it also offers expandable memory up to 8GB by using any compatible microSD card.

Since it is intended to serve both as a high-end smartphone as well as a handheld console, it does carry a slide-out gamepad which unveils all the traditional gaming buttons and keys.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is believed to be using Verizon as its carrier during its market launch in the US while AT&T might be another one to feature in Europe. Lots of games are being developed and optimized to meet the standards of this PlayStation certified phone but having only a standard 1GHz processor, it would be interesting to see how they present their game titles as this smartphone seems to be as powerful as any other mobile phones in the market today and there is nothing much being included above it.

The price of Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is not announced yet and there are also no specific details being made available regarding its launch date. But considering the reports from some of the reliable sources, the same is likely to hit the market by the month of March or April 2011.

Although it may not be that good for some serious gaming experience on the move, but it would however be worthwhile to be considered as an all-round entertainment gadget having the features to facilitate both the services of a modern smartphone as well as a mobile gaming system similar to the popular Nokia N-Gage which drew great popularity across the globe. So whatever may it be, one thing is certain that the PlayStation certified tag is enough to draw the attention of many and thereby remain on the limelight for quite some time until it is potential is practically being reviewed.
