3G service in India is now being offered by many mobile operators and has reached out most of the cities in the country. Recently, IDEA Cellular which is known to be one among the top GSM operator has rolled out their much awaited 3G services in few more places after their initial launch in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. These new circles where they will now be offering the high speed 3rd generation mobile service includes Maharashtra, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh (East & West), Kerala and Goa.
They have been eventually extending their network coverage to include new towns every day and has set its target to cover atleast 450 towns during the half yearly period. At present, the Maharashtra circle where it is recently made available includes places like Roorkee, Muzzafarnagar, Dehradun, Haridwar, Meerut, Nagpur, Nasik, Saharanpur, Pune, Rudrapur, Kashipur and Agra. In Uttar Pradesh (East), it is available in 6 places whereas in Kerala around 39 places have been so far covered and is operational for mobile users of the region to make use of the high speed data connectivity and various other features like video conferencing and Live TV Streaming.
One can easily activate the IDEA 3G service in the region where the same is currently available by composing an SMS as 'ACT3G' without the quotes and then sending it to the toll free number 12345. This can even be done by using another service command number '*147#' without the quotes which will suspend the existing 2G subscription to use 3G tariff plans and will accordingly activate the 'Pay as you Go' plan.
The cost of every video call made as Local, National or on Roaming would be charged Rs.3 per minute which is calculated as 5 paise per second. The detailed tariff plans is different for each circle where it is available and hence you can head over to the official website ( http://www.idea3g.co.in/tariff_plans.php ) to filter out your area and check the rates which are applicable.
You will however need to fulfill the basic requirements which is that you will need to have a 3G compatible mobile handset so as to use the service. If you are currently using any other network other than IDEA Cellular, then you can apply afresh or use the Mobile Number Portability service and switch over to IDEA while still retaining the previously used number.
