Mobile Number Portability (MNP) is a way by which any mobile phone users can retain their long-used or registered mobile number even if they intend to change the mobile operator. It is an obvious fact that people always try to seek the best tariff plans available through various operators and thereby needs to switch between those by either registering for multiple mobile numbers or abandoning one to avail another. But this is not the ideal way which most of the people would prefer as because it results in changing the mobile number every now and then and thus creates a lot of problems in informing every contact regarding this new number change and also in manging a bunch of such numbers. Hence, Mobile Number Portability (MNP) is a very useful service in this regard for solving these problems and thereby gives the freedom to change mobile operators without having anything to worry about remembering or coping with new mobile numbers as one single number is enough to carry along which will be the same even if one tries to avail other mobile operator's service.

The Mobile Number Portability service is now available in India and is due to be adopted by all the mobile operators very soon. As the first phase of its launch in India, the said service will be available for some selected cities in India. But as per the Department of Telecoms (DoT), the said MNP project will be extended to each and every states eventually and will be rolled out from January 20, 2011 in all the states of India except Haryana where the service is already launched. The porting charge for switching between operators is fixed at Rs.19/- by the telecom regulator which the concerned cellular operator can charge and collect from their subscribers.

The Mobile Number Portability (MNP) in India is handed over to two MNP Clearinghouse vendors who will be responsible for dealing with their respective zones and maintain security and reliability of the services being provided. The Zone I license is allotted to Syniverse Technologies and will be administering the eleven areas of India including Delhi, Mumbai, Maharashtra, Gujarat and seven others. The Zone II license is handed over to MNP Interconnection Telecom Solutions India Pvt. Ltd. and will be responsible for the places like Kolkata, Tamil Nadu (including Chennai), Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Assam, Bihar, North East, and Orissa.
